REVIEW:

The first I have to say is you must read The Legacy first as this carries on from that book. I read the Legacy when it came out, and I ‘ve been waiting for Bloodties forever. When Alexis inherited a big old house from her uncle Woodie she discovers there is a lot more to it. Alexis is an empath and discover Josh and Tucker can damper the feelings when things get bad.
In this book Alexis finds out more about her powers and how to deal with the fact the house is full of ghosts as wells as the house itself talks to her and some the knights.
In this book its nonstop action all centered around the families and the house we find out so much more and then nothing the end and now I have to wait for the next book to find out more. This kept me gripped through all the pages, that meant it felt like minutes instead hours when reading.

ARC Review: ROYALLY YOURS by New York Times Bestselling Author EMMA CHASE @emmachse @InkslingerPR

Royally Yours FOR WEB

Princess Lenora Celeste Beatrice Arabella Pembrook had an unusual childhood. She was raised to be a Queen—the first Queen of Wessco.

It’s a big deal.

When she’s crowned at just nineteen, the beautiful young monarch is prepared to rule. She’s charming, clever, confident and cunning.

What she isn’t…is married.

It’s her advising council’s first priority. It’s what Parliament is demanding, and what her people want.

Lenora has no desire to tie herself to a man—particularly one who only wants her for her crown. But compromises must be made and royals must do their duty.

Even Queens. Especially them.

**

Years ago, Edward Langdon Richard Dorian Rourke, walked away from his title and country. Now he’s an adventurer—climbing mountains, exploring jungles, going wherever he wants, when he wants—until family devotion brings him home.

And a sacred promise keeps him there.

To Edward, the haughty, guarded little Queen is intriguing, infuriating…and utterly captivating. Wanting her just might drive him mad—or become his greatest adventure.

**

Within the cold, stone walls of the royal palace—mistrust threatens, wills clash, and an undeniable, passionate love will change the future of the monarchy forever.

Every dynasty has a beginning. Every legend starts with a story.

This is theirs.

REVIEW:

What utter perfection Royally Yours is to read.
Reading about Lenora as a young woman was the icing on the royal cake made with Chocolate sublime.
We meet Lenora as a teenager following her father as he attends to his royal duties. From an early age Lenora has known she was going to be the first queen to rule Wessco. Spending very little time being a young girl, so it was beautiful reading about her relationship with Thomas and his brother Prince Edward. Thomas being her first friend had a positive influence by teaching her to be young.

This was such a pleasure reading about this woman who we know from previous books as the family’s matriarch. This is a five-star read as a beautiful story of heartbreak and finding love and joy. After reading the other books makes this so much more.

DANGEROUS EXES Release Blitz-2

REVIEW:

Dangerous Exes is the second in the series, it carries on from the end of the last book, when their PI Dirty Exes company investigates and outs cheating spouses. One of there clients wasn’t was using the company to humiliate her ex-husband because she received no money in the divorce.

Jessie Beckett is mad and wants to make them pay so he is spying on them, especially Isla its really getting to her.
This is a funny story of enemies to lovers, to get the media of Jessie’s back, as it was their company’s fault for his bad press.

To get back at his ex and the rehabilitation of his reputation. They decide that Isla and Jessie are going to pretend to be a couple. Well we always know what happens, the sparks fly. This Rachel Van Dyken at her best giving us a hilarious and hot romance between Jessie and mistrusting Isla. Great fun from the start until that wonderful ending. I have to say this is my favourite in this hilarious RomCom Series. I’m not saying anymore just read it for yourself and have a great time..

IBY-AN-IG2 TEASER

REVIEW:

This an entertaining romance between the nerdy intelligent sassy Penelope and the heartthrob on the campus Ryker quarterback of the college football team.
This semester is important for both, as they are working hard for the careers they both want.

So, no distractions for Ryker, so it’s a real shock when he can’t stop thinking about Red. As much as Penelope wishes she could stop her fantasies about Ryker and she keeps writing him the lead roll in the romantic fiction she is writing. Penelope wants to be an author as that’s her goal she needs a nice intelligent guy, except Ryker is intelligent and kind and she tingles when he touches him.

This is a sweet entertaining romance and it shows you need to learn to look past labels get to know someone. Ryker and Penelope became friends, but it just wasn’t enough for both of them. This is a great college based romance, and great fun watching Ryker and Penelope dance around each other. There is much more to this entertaining romance, but that’s for you to find out.

REVIEW:

Winning Whitney is story of Jake the captain of The Alaska Blizzards, we have met him in previous books, but this can still be read as a standalone. Whitney is staying with Hayley and Kane looking after their twins.
Whitney is absolutely gobsmacked when a man she spent a hot few days with in Boston four years previously walks into Hailey’s house with Kane. Whitney realizes Jake is Jackson who she has never forgotten. Jake can’t believe it’s  his found the woman his never forgotten.
Every time Jake and Whitney are together in a room both feel the sexual tension, but there is so much going on in both their lives the road ahead is rocky. As we all know the fun is in going along that road.
Another romance in this enchanting series based in Alaska that always make me shiver when I read one. A good solid romance with plenty sexual tension between the two.
All the books in this series can be read as a standalone, but reading them in order gives you a greater understanding of the background other characters who begin to feel like old friends. As this is only book three, its not that many books to catch up on.

Narrator Bio

Kieren Calland Metts is addicted to audiobooks. She has almost 1,000 in her Audible.com library and has listened to most of them! She tends toward mysteries of all kinds, especially cozies, and YA dystopia.

She grew up a diplomat brat, traveling to tours in Baghdad, Iraq; and Kabul, Afghanistan. After several more moves in the U.S., the family settled in Ohio.

Kieren has a background in copy editing, book & newspaper design, and web production; adores arts and crafts; and has a weakness for fluffy orange kitties.

We get to know Angelina so much more in this book, she almost feels like an old friend. What starts as an investigation into a young woman’s inheritance, becomes one of the biggest cases she has ever had to deal with.
We still have some of the same people that were in the first book. Angelina is still seeing Ted as their relationship becomes much deeper. Her Sicilian family is celebrating Thanksgiving with a mix of family and new friends.
This book I enjoyed even more than the last as we are familiar with all the players. This is a complex and upsetting case for every one involved. This investigation uncovers a massive conspiracy that brings danger to all those involved. I am now addicted to the adventures of Angelina Bonaparte and can’t wait for the next one.
The narration is up to the normal high quality , keeping me glued to this complex adventure.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Nanci Rathbun. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A With Narrator Kieren Calland Metts

  • A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
    • No, I don’t think it’s essential. But then that might be because I don’t have a background in theatre, hah. I have had vocal training and sang for many years, so I understand how important it is to breathe properly and take care of my voice. All that aside, the most important thing is to be able to tell an engaging tale.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Oh yes! I’m edging toward 1,000 titles in my Audible account and I’ve even listened to most of them! I enjoy the freedom to do other things while listening to a book — gardening, cleaning and, especially, heading out on a road trip.
  • What about this title compelled you to audition as narrator?
    • I was drawn immediately to the main character, Angelina Bonaparte. She’s feisty 50-something private investigator who has great taste in clothes and cars — and a sexy boyfriend, too. I kinda want to BE Angie.
  • How closely do you prefer to work with authors?
    • I love to work with authors — the book is their baby, after all, and I want to make sure my performance reflects their thinking when they wrote it.
  • Who are your “accent inspirations”?
    • I have a list of narrators who I think do great accents and sometimes I listen to excerpts of their work several times, absorbing the effect. Interestingly, the best accents to my ear are very light — mostly just a hint to highlight a character’s personality and distinguish them from other characters.
  • How did you decide how each character should sound in this title?
    • Angie is closest to my natural voice. I chose a low but slightly intense voice for Wukowski because he’s a taciturn, troubled guy. His partner tends to be a little hyper, so I went with a higher, faster tone for him. Angie’s aunt is a little older and pious, so I gave her softer, slightly shaky voice.
  • Do you read reviews for your audiobooks?
    • I do read them. So far, I’ve found most of them very helpful and have made changes in my performances after reading criticisms of things such as my character voices or pacing.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • First, I tell them to think about folks who have limited or no sight. Are they cheating or not “really” reading? Besides, the performance simply adds another layer to the experience.

REVIEW:

Well the first thing I have to say is My God What A Book, I’m still trying to calm down. This is not a pretty romance, for most of it the heroine was suffering at first physically and then what seemed worst mentally. R.G Corr’s attention to detail when approaching the subject is superb carrying the reader all through the story and Ginny’s circumstances, leaving me feeling the fear and the feelings of hopelessness with her.
All in all, I think this was a story of hope, but with realism because anyone going through what Ginny went through wouldn’t heal overnight and them walk into the sunset with a new man. That’s all I’m saying I’m trying not to add any spoilers.
I would like a Nate waiting for me, giving Ginny hope for the future. A superb and realistic story of Ginny and Nates family recovering and having a positive outcome.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I glance down to the faded and weathered-looking wood panels of the bench I’m sitting on. From a distance, you don’t notice the beaten, worn appearance. It’s only when you get closer you see the extent of the damage. The colour stain on the wood lifts in various places. One slat is cracked and brittle to the touch. It even feels damp underneath my legs due to the coldness of the day. It’s damaged, but it’s still here, providing what it promises. A respite.

Some would choose not to sit on this bench, instead preferring the modern shiny versions further down the road. Yet for me, this bench is a flicker of hope. Sitting here means I’m one step closer to talking to somebody. One step closer to proving that the situation I’m in is not normal or right.

My focus rests on the alley across the road where today I had hoped I would find the courage to walk. But uncertainty lingers in my heart and mind like a dead weight, holding me down.

To passers-by, you’d be forgiven for believing I possess courage. I appear well groomed and in control. How can I be anything else? Why would I want to admit that I’m ashamed of the person I’ve become? I’m so used to faking a smile that at one time, I wondered if it was fixed permanently on my face. Now I know it isn’t. My smile no longer presents itself freely. It’s displayed as an act. A performance.

My hands jitter in my lap, the only physical indication of the fear and uncertainty that racks my body. If I go in there, I admit I’m that person, that woman who allows herself to be beaten. Only allowing isn’t really the right term. I don’t give permission. I beg for him to stop. I plead like a helpless child. How can I still love him, when I hate what he does to me? With each word and every shock of pain, I fear the love I have for him is lessening and the hatred growing. But the loathing isn’t solely for him, it’s for me too.

Walking away from Blake requires a strength that I don’t hold. Take now. I’ve been here for over half an hour, only occasionally daring to glance at the building I should be walking into. I sit, surrounded by high-rise buildings and impressive monuments, emphasising how small and insignificant I truly am. So full of self-pity, Ginny. I curl my lip up at the truth of my thoughts.

Company arrives on the other side of the bench, surprising me. On the four times I’ve been here, I’ve not seen one person even come near the bench. I don’t look up to acknowledge whoever it is. Instead, I move even closer to the armrest on my right, increasing our distance and feeling that little bit safer with the wood by my side. I shift my attention to the brick built buildings in front of me. There are a number of offices, some shops, but it’s down the wide alley where my focus lies. A trail of shops and offices lead to an alcove with the blue door that holds my attention. It’s only just visible from where I’m sitting.

I clasp my hands together in my lap in a bid to cease the shaking, but the movement causes my sleeve to ride up slightly, and the edging of the bruise on my wrist comes into view. Immediately, I tug on my jacket pulling the cuffs into my palm. My cheeks heat with shame, I dip my head and retreat further into the back of the bench, hoping for whoever it is sitting near me, not to have seen.

“[S]pace opera that plays out on a grand scale, and Young conduct[s] it with aplomb.”–Pop Cults, the website of Geek and Alternative Culture

For over seven hundred years, theSpartan Republic’s citizens have known one truth: Terra is coming. Descendants of exiles who dared to defy an emperor, the star nation’s 70 billion citizens spent the centuries training, arming…and waiting.

In 3035, Lt. Ian Campbell, Spartan Defense Forces (SDF), discovers a strange anomaly on his corvette’s sensors…and realizes the wait is over. The Spartans must convince the Terrans of the cost of subduing their nation. If they succeed, the Republic survives. If not, the SDF will be forced to paint the stars red with their enemies’ blood.

The Confederation of Man was born in the terror of the Harran Empire’s death throes. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, humanity now spreads from its cradle on Earth to hundreds of stars across the Milky Way, and seeks out new worlds to add.

Captain Marcy Cochran was hoping to find a habitable planet; she didn’t expect the system to already have hostile humans. Now a captive, Cochran must contend with a crew proving to be as dangerous as their enemies, and prevent what has started out as a misunderstanding from becoming a full-fledged interstellar war.  For Terran law is quite clear: All humanity will answer to the Confederation. For the Spartans, that makes the government on Earth no different than the empire it supplanted…and they would rather die on their feet than subjugate themselves once more.

Aries’ Red Sky is the newest novel in James Young’s Vergassy Chronicles universe. A prequel to An Unproven Concept, it is the first in the Spartan Trilogy. If you like space opera with compelling characters, military sci-fi with high body counts, and capital ship battles on a galactic scale, pick up the the latest work in a series whose previous entry was recommended Amazing Stories, Pop Cults, and The MidwestBook Review.

James Young is a Missouri native who left small town life to attend a small, well-known Federal institution in upstate New York. After obtaining a degree in military history from West Point, Dr. Young spent six years repaying his education via military service in various locations (both foreign and domestic). Along the way he collected a loving, patient, and beautiful spouse (Anita C. Young)…and various animals that only fit those descriptions when it suited them.

Upon leaving the Army, James returned to the Midwest to obtain his Ph.D. in U.S. History from Kansas State. When not tormenting his characters, Dr. Young spends his spare time reading Anita’s first drafts, finishing that pesky dissertation, and trying to figure out how book eating shelter animals keep ending up in his office. Outside of Amazon, he can be found at conventions throughout the Midwest selling books and merchandise as James Young, Slinger of Tales.

In addition to his positive fiction reviews, Dr. Young is also the winner of the United States Naval Institute’s 2016 Cyberwar fare Essay Contest and runner up in the 2011 Adams Center Cold War Essay Contest. He has also had multiple articles published in Proceedings and the Journal of Military History since 2010.

Narrator Bio

Jennifer Jill Araya has been listening to audiobooks since she was a young child, and the fact that she now gets to narrate audiobooks for a living is a dream come true. Jennifer’s training as an opera singer and orchestral cellist lend a musicality and depth of understanding to her narration that help bring her authors’ stories to life. She loves nothing more than giving life and breath to the printed word.
When she’s not narrating, Jennifer can be found hiking, biking, running, or generally exploring her home city of Cincinnati with her husband Arturo (aka “Partner in Crime”) and their two children.

I have to say this a long audiobook, and at first you must concentrate to make sure you don’t get names and ships in a muddle. The human world as we know is now Known as The Confederation as we have planets in many systems.
We also have the Spartan Empire who left earth 700years before to escape a dictatorship called the Harran Empire, as they wanted to have religious freedoms. All this time they have been preparing for a war with the Terran Empire.
All this wonderful space opera is the good and the bad on both sides. How a like normal people and terrible war crimes committed by both sides. This is a long Audiobook, but you begin to know the characters involved, and you begin to root for them.
The narration is superb when you consider all the different voices. When I was listening, I was on the deck of a spaceship listening to what was going on. I was lucky as I was on many ships and planets. When I’m really in the action I don’t like to be pulled out of the action. That is the mark of great narrator, and this narrator really sent me on a wondrous journey

Top 10 List

Author James Young’s Top 10 Literary Inspirations

#1 Alas, Babylon

I read this book as a child and it’s always stuck with me.  Frank does a very good job of dealing with disaster without sinking into the proverbial “grimdark” of later works.

#2 Dies the Fire

Another disaster book.  This one really highlights S.M. Stirling’s writing style and his ability to make ordinary people into heroes.  If I won the lottery and never had to work again in my life, this would be a series I would catch up on with my newfound spare time.

#3 Red Storm Rising

Another influence when I was young.  I’ve always liked Clancy’s decision to go with the omniscient third person when necessary to convey the chaos that is unfolding across an entire engagement.

#4 Robotech Series

When I’m doing my elevator pitch for the Vergassy series, I tell people it’s like “Battlestar Galactica, Aliens, and Robotech thrown into a blender.”  A small, niche fandom, the novelizations were written by multiple people under the pseudonym “Jack McKinney.” Regardless of who was doing things, this was a huge influence on me with regards to how I conceptualize space combat.

#5 The Big E

Although Barrett Tillman’s Enterprise takes advantage of a broader interview base on scholarship, this is a book that I consider the “gold standard” for recounting a vessel’s history.  As with all my books, there are elements of it that interweave individual ship’s actions and discussion of their crews.

#6 The Girl With the Silver Eyes

I liked this one for the way that Willo Roberts got us into the character’s mind and motivation.  A good example of an outsider feeling so different…then realizing it’s a big world out there and that means there’s lots of other folks like oneself.

#7 Bridge to Teribithia

This was one of the first books I remember ever making me cry.  In that way, it taught me the proper method for conducting a character’s demise, i.e., it serves the plot and cuts the reader.

#8 The Impending Crisis, 1848-1861

A grim, somber walk through as to how the United States went from a nation with minor friction to folks actively shooting at one another in less than a decade.  Does a very good job of showing how the majority of the country did not want a no kidding Civil War…yet the nation got one just the same. This helps to understand how people can so demonize and mischaracterize the other sides’ actions that it’s almost impossible to reconcile without a major defeat.

#9 This Kind of War

This book lays out the price of unpreparedness versus having a combat mindset.  With regards to Aries’ Red Sky, I do model some of the Confederation Fleet’s unpreparedness off of the same issues the United States Army had in 1950.  Preparedness is a mindset.

#10 Team Yankee

This is another “World War Three” novel.  Unlike Red Storm Rising, it is very focused at the small unit level.  I loved it in high school before I even left to join the Army. After I became an officer, I realized Harold Coyle really did have a good grip on small unit interactions and craziness.

Honorable Mention– When Worlds Collide / After Worlds Collide  (Toss up so I just added both)

This is the go to book for “The world is ending.”  While it’s somewhat dated (from the 1930s), it’s somewhat prescient in how it foresees the horrors that the “European fascists” are capable of.  While it’s down the road, one of the prequel novellas for my series will have several homages to these two books.

Author James Young’s Playlist for Aries’ Red Sky

So I have different playlists for different needs.  Aries’ Red Sky is a pretty gritty work, so my playlist for it was pretty dark.  Without further ado:

  1. “Bottle of Pain”–Combichrist

This is basically a “Things are hopeless, we’re all about to die, but we want some company crossing the Styx”-song.  In some ways, it sums up the Spartan Republic’s desire to die fighting rather than submit to expected tyranny.

  1. Look Up! The Sky is Falling”-Michael Bradley

I’m not afraid to let me geek flag fly, and Robotech is a guilty pleasure.  I always thought the grimness of this song also applies to a sci-fi setting.

  1. “Barbarian”–The Darkness

In addition to being a huge geek, I’m also a historian.  The tempo and lyrics of this song just suit well to writing fight scenes, especially those involving boarding actions in space.

  1. Hear Me Now”–Bad Wolves (feat. Diamante)

There are a couple of relationships that develop during Aries Red Sky.  In addition to being another good tempo song, this one discusses two people who are gradually falling in love.

  1. “The World Is Not Enough”-Garbage

I’m not saying this is the Du family theme song…but I’m not saying it isn’t either.

  1. Resurrection Hub”–Bear McCreary

This song will pretty much serve as a stand in for the numerous Battlestar Galactica original soundtrack recordings I listened to while crafting Aries’ Red Sky’s combat scenes.  The reboot version of this series, as well as David Weber’s Honorverse, are two huge influence on how I envision space combat in most of my books.

  1. “I Am The Hammer.”–Eternal Champion

Written from the perspective of a leader whose land is being beset on all sides by enemies, this song has just the right mix of confidence, malice, and declared intent in its lyrics.

  1. “Angels of Death (Space Marine Theme)”–Doyle W. Donehoo

Although I’m more “familiar” with the 40k universe than a fan, this is a stirring song where one can imagine a sci-fi military parade passing in review.

  1. “No Leaf Clover”–Metallica

Another old standby that I’ve always said, “If I had to fly the trench run in Star Wars, this is the song I want playing over the speakers.”

  1. “Even In Death”–Evanescence

Without spoiling anything, there’s a lot of loss in Aries’ Red Sky.  This song and what is says about mourning has always resonated with me since I first heard it back in ‘03.

Bonus Songs:

Light of the Seven”–331 Erock Metal Cover /  Ramin Djawadi

Rains of Castamere” Serj Tankian / Ramin Djawadi

For those occasions where I needed to capture the utter savagery and hopelessness of carnage being inflicted upon characters, these were two of my go to YouTube selections.  Fans of Game of Thrones will understand the reasoning for this, and I think these two versions are especially compelling.

Star by Star–The Kovenant

In listening to the lyrics, I think the reasons for my listing this as a bonus song will become clear.

Well, mostly regular. Some students are actually hidden members of the Magicorum. In other words, they’re really wizards, fairies, or shifters. Bry doesn’t mind, though. She’s thrilled to enjoy all the new experiences of being around normal kids her age, from locker pranks to lunchtime mystery meat. Everything is going along great, except for one thing.

Bry’s dreams about the pyramids of Egypt have gotten darker and more sinister. Every night, she sees her new man Knox and her best friend Elle in danger.

“Exciting and well-conceived” – Kirkus

With no other choice, Bry plans to leave school to explore the pyramids on her own. But her new man Knox discovers the scheme and is having none of it. He wants to stay by her side, no matter what. It’s a good thing too, because Bry must solve the mystery of her attraction to the pyramids and soon. Otherwise, it could cost the lives of those she loves most.

And that means not only Knox, but also her best friend Elle.

REVIEW:

Wow what a book, Christina Bauer has created another series which has become a must buy for me. This book blew me a away with all our heroes in it, but this was definitely Bryer Rose and Knox’s story. One I never saw coming, I thought this would be centred on her trek into schooling west Lake Prep, but that was a small part.
This book is centred around the Autumn equinox and tracking down the fountain of magic to strengthen the magic, as it is in danger of dying out. This is an action packed adventured and Bryer learning to let herself love and accept love from Knox. I not going to tell you anymore about this book except to say  I was blown away and this series get better with every book. Christine Bauer has such an incredible imagination that has me addicted to her storytelling.

ARC Review: BIG STICK ( Aces Hockey #7 ) by KELLY JAMIESON is Now LIVE!@KellyJamieson

Big Stick by Kelly Jamieson is available now!

“Kelly Jamieson is my go-to author for hockey romance.”—USA Today bestselling author Jami Davenport

A brooding hockey hunk learns to embrace life—and love—from a single mom who takes the world one puck at a time. Big move . . . Jodie’s motto is “Don’t wait for the perfect moment—take the moment and make it perfect.” And that’s just what she decides to do when she moves to Chicago with her two-year-old daughter. Now all Jodie needs is a place to live, and her best friend’s boyfriend has just the answer.

Big stick . . . Nick Balachov has zero interest in socializing, partying, or flirting right now. It’s not that he doesn’t like women. He loves them. It’s just that hockey, casual hookups, and hanging out at home are enough for him these days. Now Nick has a big problem—because the woman living in his empty coach house is a major distraction.

Big deal? The more Nick tries to keep his distance, the more Jodie needs him—around the house, that is. First he helps with the snowstorm, then the power outage. Nick even finds himself trying to impress her little girl. What the hell is wrong with him? Jodie represents everything Nick doesn’t want. But maybe she’s just what he needs. . . .

REVIEW:

Big Stick is a super sweet story of Nick Balachov an Aces Hockey Player, and a super loner that has to force himself to go to his friend Hallsy party. Nick is going through a bad patch and Kendra’s friend Jodie is driving him mad she just doesn’t stop talking. Jodie and her toddler daughter Zyana need somewhere to stay, and Nick has an empty Coach House. Well I think we all know what happens after Jodie and Zyana move in.
This is a sweet romance between a moody giant and Jodie a devoted mother and business woman.
I love a good sexy romance when I’m imagining the well-built athletic men turning into loving men and father figures. So it’s the journey we enjoy in this sweet romance with a bit of sexy times thrown in.
Nick was so sweet with little Zyana, looking after when she was ill.
